Small moments on the road - Everyday life in a transport company

Logistics is about schedules and routes, but the real journey happens between the lines.
It is in the views, the pit stops and the quiet moments behind the wheel.

Andrew is one of those who spends a large part of his life on the road. His work is about traveling, but within it there is also peace, precision and a routine that holds it all together. Andrew is often smiling even before the engine starts. He describes his working days as varied: sometimes the road takes him far away, sometimes the day is spent on a familiar circuit and then he gets to go home in the evening. The morning always starts in the same way: cleaning the car, dusting and ensuring the driving condition. It’s the same at the end of the day. “It’s a small thing, but it’s important. It’s how every day begins and ends with,” Andrew explains.

The best moments at work come from traveling and problem solving. “The best moments are when you get to drive and do things. The most challenging time is when there is something wrong at home and you’re far away. That’s when the road feels longer than usual,” he says.

From childhood dream to profession

Andrew says he got into transport as a result of a childhood dream. “It was a dream come true. Big cars and that little bit of freedom fascinated me from a young age and still does.” When he started out, a lot of things only became clear through experience. “A lot of things have come up that you didn’t think about beforehand. Some things you only learn as you go along,” Andrew recalls. On the road, the rhythm is tight, but there are quiet moments in between.
Andrew says he prefers peaceful breaks with space to breathe. “The best thing is to get somewhere quiet, eat home-cooked food and go for a walk with the dog. But the best time of all is when you get to go home to your loved one for the night,” he says.

Over the years, work has changed in many ways. “Working time laws have tightened and there are more controls, but cars have evolved enormously,” says Andrew. He points out that a driver’s job is much more than just driving. “There’s a lot of customer service, meeting people and dealing with situations.”

Journeys and memorable routes

Every driver has routes that remain as a memory. Andrew cites the A1 via Haselünnen to Holland as a particular favourite. “It has a certain atmosphere, I can’t say why, but it always feels nice.”

As the most beautiful place Andrew mentions Lofoten. A combination of mountains, sea and light that makes you stop in your tracks every time. But there are also moments that are heavier to reminice. “Once a loved one was hospitalised and I was far away. The journey back home felt really long”

You’ll always find familiar companions in the cockpit. “A teddy bear and my dog Iines always go with me,” says Andrew with a smile. The music plays freely and according to the mood. “Spotify plays all kinds of music. Every day has its own beat.”

3 questions for Andrew:

What makes this work rewarding?

The word “Thank you”.

Do you have a favourite place where you like to stop?

Hmm… There are many, but perhaps the best one I’ve usually visited is the one place after Inari. You can enjoy the nature of Lapland in peace and quiet when even your phone doesn’t work there.

What one little thing always puts you in a good mood on the road?

A successful trip to my destination and that my car is in good condition and clean 😎.
